Discussion
Every movement signal is a doorway to the dreaming process. When a client gestures, shifts their weight, or alters their posture, they are not just moving through space—they are mapping out the matrix of their dreaming.
This intensive 2-hour masterclass bridges Laban Space Harmony (Choreutics) with Process-Oriented Psychology. Laban Space Harmony views Space* as a dynamic, living geometry—a matrix, that reflects human inner states and dreaming experiences. By experiencing Laban’s spatial forms—such as the three planes of movement, the kinesphere, and spatial tension—Processwork practitioners can track, amplify, and unfold the experience of dreaming with pinpoint accuracy.
Through direct experiential practice, participants will learn to recognize when space itself becomes a vital indicator of a dreaming process. For instance, does a subtle upward hand movement connect a client to their deepest, essential self? In the midst of an escalating conflict, can facilitating a micro-signal—such as a slight gesture or lean backward—de-escalate the field and open the door to genuine communication?
Through dynamic theoretical frameworks, live demonstrations, and experiential exercises, you will discover how to safely navigate the matrix of space, channeling primary and secondary processes into profound embodied insights.
By the end of this 2 hour session you will be able to:
- Identify the main dimensions of the body,
- the planes and
- your unique experience of moving in them.
Map Spatial Matrix: Identify the 3 cardinal dimensions and planes of movement and experience their inner state changes.
Tune Spatial Awareness: Track micro-movements in space to unlock the profound inner states and relational dynamics embodied within them.
Amplify Safely: Use Laban’s concept of special tension to amplify and complete secondary movement signals without flooding the client.
Facilitate Non-Verbal Signals: Become familiar with using your own body to support non-verbal experience through your unique movement-sense in space.
Channel Shifts: Support the unfolding of a signal from the proprioceptive (interoceptive)/kinesthetic channel toward integration in the visual and/or auditory channel.

*The Laban/Bartenieff Movement System is concerned with how the movement is done in the following 4 areas or subchannels: what is the quality or Effort of the movement; where it goes in Space; what form it takes or Shape; and what moves or Body. For those who have been introduced to the “effort qualities”: Time Effort, Weight Effort, Space Effort, and Flow Effort. Space Effort is one of the ways you can perceive the quality of a movement. Space Harmony, what we will work with in this class, is about where the movement goes in space and the rich expressive experiences that it holds. All of the 4 categories offer rich opportunities for perceiving and unfolding movement.
