Meaning, Wisdom and Magic in Extreme States

Learning Areas

“This shadow is like the city’s dream portraying its neglected gods, the hopelessness it will not admit, its withdrawal from superficial communication, its suicidal tendencies, mania, addictions, murderous rage and hypersensitivity. The shadow reminds us of the smouldering revolution we normally perceive only in the dark of night or in the impinging quality of physical symptoms.”

- Arnold Mindell, 1988, City Shadows -

What You'll Learn

Discussion

You see someone running in the street. They are naked. They are yelling that they are god (and can heal the world). Who are they? What is their life story? What do they NEED to reach safety and wholeness?

Can we trust our psychiatric system to take care of them?

Is there truth to what they are saying? Is there meaning?

Are they crazy? Is the world crazy?

How can we tend to this human being?

How are they YOU and also ME?

Extreme States of Consciousness* can be scary, dangerous and even life threatening. They are also rich, meaningful and powerful experience that hold wisdom and magic.

In this 2-hour class, Myriam Rahman and Ingrid Rose will dip into the vast topic of Extreme States (sometimes called psychosis) helping all of us to get a deeper understanding of these experiences.

We will touch on the various roles (such as trauma and oppression) found at the basis of these experiences, as well as the concepts of City Shadows and Mad Maps*. We will focus on the importance of the body, breath and our relationship to the earth.

Myriam and Ingrid give thanks to our mentors’ and ancestors’ teachings about Extreme States. These teachings draw from the original wisdom and ways of Indigenous Peoples. Unfortunately, this is rarely acknowledged, an appropriation that ironically perpetuates social conditions that contribute to the escalation and marginalization of people who have Extreme States of Consciousness.

*Mad Maps is a tool created by the Fire Weed Collective.
*Extreme States of Consciousness is a term coined by Arnold Mindell, author of City Shadows.
