The Paradox of Wetiko and Non-Duality in a Nutshell
We are exploring two fundamental aspects of reality: the Native American concept of wetiko (the mind-virus of apparent evil) and the non-dual nature of ultimate reality. These seemingly contradictory perspectives coexist, each true on its own level of reality. Understanding this paradox is key to navigating our complex human experience.
Discussion
Our experience encompasses multiple levels of reality simultaneously. On the relative level, wetiko operates as a real force, creating suffering and division. On the absolute level, non-dual consciousness pervades all, transcending distinctions of good and evil. Our challenge and opportunity lie in holding both these truths simultaneously.
The process of identification—of who we think we are—is crucial in understanding this paradox. “Who do we think we are?” implies that our sense of identity relates to our thinking, our very mind itself. Our experience of identity is malleable, a function of our own mind. We participate in creating our moment-by-moment experience of identity, navigating between the relative reality where wetiko operates and the absolute reality of non-dual consciousness.
Our true nature, our deepest identity, exists beyond wetiko’s influence while simultaneously encompassing the reality where wetiko operates. Wetiko can’t possess our true nature, which transcends all phenomena. Yet, in our human experience, we must acknowledge and work with the reality of wetiko. The key is to recognize both levels without denying either.
If we solely focus on non-dual awareness without acknowledging the relative reality of wetiko, we risk spiritual bypassing. Conversely, if we only engage with wetiko without recognizing our non-dual nature, we may become overwhelmed by the apparent power of evil. The middle way is to dance between these realities, using our understanding of both to inform our actions and perspectives.
